Lions win home meet

The Clear Lake boys hosted their first home meet of the year at Veteran’s Memorial Golf Course Friday, May 1.  The Lions dominated Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden to win.

“It’s too bad it took until now to play at home so we’re glad to play here,” said Coach Eric Perry.  His team fired a 152 to top Algona by 20 strokes.  IF-A was third with 183.

Dane Waldron was on his game.  The senior was medalist with a 33.

“The par fives on this course are short for his long game.  He has eagle and tap-in birdie putts that make a scorecard look good,” said Coach Perry.

Thomas Storbeck and Austin Rurup each had rounds of 39 to finish as runners-up.

“I was especially proud of Austin,” said Coach Perry.  “He has had a terrible year, to the point of not having fun.  We’ve spoken several times about having a better outlook.  He has been scoring better in practice and finished with his first sub-40 round.  Austin was a big reason for a success at the end of the year last year, so I’m hoping he comes into form.”

Anthony Piscopo and Tanner Storbeck each had rounds of 41 and Kyle Calaguas had a 44 for the Lions.

The Lions ranked eighth in Class 3A by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association, compete in the North Central Conference Championship Monday, May 11, at the Algona Country Club.  The Lions are 39-10 overall and 4-2 in the
