Lions make good showng at Battle of Waterloo

Wrestlers enjoy holiday break with 17-3 record

The Clear Lake wrestlers had a great first semester.  The team is ranked sixth in the state and has five individuals ranked.  The Lions’  three losses have been by eight points or less and they are without their highest state place winner from last year, Ryan Schmalen.

Just before the holiday break the Lions went 4-2 at the 32-team Battle of Waterloo.  They lost a very close first round match to Charles City, 33-30.   The Comets went on to take third place in the tournament, beating  returning state champion West Delaware and last year’s dual meet state champion Davenport Assumption.

“We are right there with the best teams in the state,” said Coach Gary Weber.  “We now have to work even harder and beat them.  Our assistant coaches have done an outstanding job juggling our line-up to give our team the best chance to win duals.  Our wrestlers have done a great job of being team players and wrestling at whatever weights we need them to for our team to be successful.”

Brennen Doebel , Ryan Leisure and Andres Gonzalez all went 6-0 at the Battle of Waterloo.  Doebel (19-1) is ranked second in Class 2A, along with Gonzalez (20-0).  Leisure (18-2) is ranked seventh.
