Lions extend regular season wins to 37

Clear Lake scored on every drive in a 56-6 thrashing of Humboldt Friday night, Sept. 23, on the Wildcats’ home field.  The win moved the top rated (3A) Lions to 5-0 and extended their state leading longest regular season chain of wins to 37 games.
    The Lions jumped out to a 36-0 lead at the half.  Three of the touchdowns were provided by junior fullback Cody Maulsby, who tallied 213 yards on 24 carries.  He added a fourth TD in the third quarter, running for a 49-yard score on third down and nine.

    “We took what they gave us,” explained Coach Fred Wieck after the game.  “Out of respect, they were taking Ozzie (Adams) away.  We gave the ball to Maulsby and saw him grow in this game.  Good stuff for a young kid.”  The coach noted credit also had to be given to the Lions’ front line, which provided good blocking all night for the Lion ball carriers.
    Michael Keeran started the Lion scoring barrage, running the ball in from 10-yards out in the first quarter.  That effort was followed by a two-point conversion run by Matt Bieber for an 8-0 lead.  Keeran struck again in the second quarter, this time on a 41-yard pass from Adams. 
    Gavin Sheakley kept the pressure on in the second half.  He fielded the opening kickoff on the seven and returned it for a touchdown. 
    Aaron Boeshart became the fourth Lion to score. The junior broke loose for a 50 yard score with 4:51 remaining.  An extra point kick by Zach Huey made the score 56-6.  Logan Kracht had made five previous extra point kicks.
    Clear Lake rushed for 315 yards on 39 carries  and did not punt in the contest.  Maulsby accounted for more than that total, with 213 yards on 24 totes. Boeshart had one run for 50, Matt Bieber carried three times for 20 and Keeran had three rushes for 20-yards.  Chase Lester ran once for 10 yards and Brice Wilke had two carries for four yards.  Sheakley rushed the ball once and lost six yards.
    Adams was 4/7 passing for 88 yards. Keeran’s 41-yard reception topped the list.  Luke Monson made one catch for 35 yards.  Jake Kockler had one reception for seven.
    A number of Lions saw considerable action on defense.  The tackle stats were led by sophomore Carter Hand, who recorded eight, three of them solo.  Another sophomore, Connor Nosbisch, had seven tackles and Treslyn Allison made five. - Read More Via e-Edtion
