Lions crowns three champions at Clear Lake Invitational

The Clear Lake wrestling team placed second Saturday at the nine-team Clear Lake Invitational. Charles City won the tournament.

Three Lions were crowned champions: Brennen Doebel, Ryan Leisure and Andres Gonzalez.  Doebel was named the meet’s most outstanding wrestler by the nine coaches. 

Three Lions were also second place finishers. Ryan Faught, Blake Kelso and Connor Nosbisch wrestled well, but lost to state ranked wrestlers.

“We wrestled well, but Charles City is just that good,” said Lions Coach Gary Weber.  “We would like to thank all of the workers that helped.”

The Lions will continue to be tested by tough competition this week.  Saturday the Lions will take on number two ranked Davenport Assumpton and number seven Osage, as well as Independence at the Osage Tournament.  Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Lions will battle seventh ranked (3A) Mason City. 

“The Mason City meet is a good local rival for us,” said Coach Weber.  “The pep band is playing, it’s Parent’s Night, Coaches vs. Cancer, and junior varsity wrestling-- it should be fun. We only have two home duals, so we are hoping our fans can make it out to see some good wrestling.”

Here are Coach Weber’s comments from the Clear Lake Invitational:

106: Brennen Doebel, first place.  Brennen pinned Andrew Mettry, of Forest City, who was 27-0 and ranked number three in the state.  If we can keep his weight stabilized, he will be tough for anyone to beat.

113: Ryan Leisure, first place. Ryan had two pins and a technical fall on the day. He is wrestling just great and is also helping the team by moving to 120 when necessary.

120: Tanner Berger, fourth place. Tanner had a great day.  He was losing 12-1 and came back and pinned a kid from LeMars with only three seconds left in the match.

126: Spencer Orr, third place. Spencer went 3-1 on the day and looked good. 

132: Ryan Faught, second place. Ryan lost a close match in the finals. He is working very hard and we will continue to work on some technical situations. 

138: Andres Gonzalez, first place. Andres also had two pins and won 15-4 in the finals over the seventh ranked wrestler in the state.  He is a beast and is 23-0 on the year.

145: Blake Kelso, second place.  Blake had two close wins to get to the finals. He showed a lot of heart to come back and win two matches that he trailed in.

152: T.J. Hauser, fifth place.  TJ had two nice pins to take fifth.

160: Logan Wilcke, fifh place. Logan just dropped to 160 this week. We are trying to help him with techniques that our staff feels will help add to his number of wins.

170: Brad Hillyer.  Brad did not place, but showed a lot of heart all week by wrestling up a weight class to help the team.

182: Connor Nosbisch, second place. Connor’s only loss was to undefeated state place winner Joe Teage, of Algona. 

195: Carter Garrington, fourth place. Carter was one point from making it to the finals.  He is having a good year.

220: Ace Walton, fifth place. Ace only weighs 190 and is wrestling 220. He is doing well.

220: Kyle Willms, sixth place. Kyle picked up his first varsity win on Saturday. He has a bright future.

285: Mitchell Jordan, fifth place.  Mitchell lost 1-0 to the champion. He - Read More Via e-Edition
