Lion grapplers win Webster City Tournament

The Clear Lake wrestling team went 4-1 and won the Webster City Dual Tournament Saturday, topping some large schools in the process.

“To beat Ankeny, 51-10, and Waterloo West, 49-25, is a real credit to our kids,” said Coach Gary Weber.  “We also beat a very good Webster City team, 33-23.   What I was most impressed with as a coach was all of our kids moving up a weight class to help the team win duals. They are very unselfish and team orientated, which is a real pleasure to coach.”

This week the Lions are at Clarion Wednesday to take on the Cowboys and Pocahontas on Thursday.   The wrestlers compete in the prestigious 32 team Battle of Waterloo Friday and Saturday. The Lions open up at 4 p.m. Friday night against Charles City.  They will wrestle again at 6 and 8 p.m. If the Lions win against Charles City, they will be in the championship bracket again at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday. If they lose in the first round, they will wrestle Saturday morning. Teams must be invited to participate in this classic event.  Coach Weber says the best  teams in Class 1A, 2A and 3A will be there.

Here is a recap of the Lion’s performances during the past week from Coach Weber:

106: Brennen Doebel, 4-1. Brennen lost a close match to the sixth rated wrestler in Class 3A.  This will only make him better.  He is 11-1. 113: Ryan Leisure, 4-1.  Ryan is unbelievable. He weighs in at 113 and wrestles 120 to help his team; that is asking a lot of a freshman and he is winning in dominant fashion.  His lone loss was to the sixth ranked wrestler in 3A.

120: Sam Jones.  Sam did a great job and won some nice matches to help us win.

126: Spencer Orr, 3-2. Spencer is 10-2 and having a phenomenal year.

132: Ryan Faught, 5-0.  Ryan is 12-0 on the year.  All of the extra wrestling he has done is paying off.

138: Andres Gonzalez, 5-0. Andres had four pins and a forfeit.  He is 12-0 on the year and is wrestling with determination. He looks  great.

145: Blake Kelso, 3-2.  Blake had a big pin against Waukee and gave us a chance to win the dual.  He is working very hard and he will have a great year.

152: T.J. Hauser, 2-3. T.J. moved up to 160 to help the team Saturday.

160: Alex Meddellin.  Alex weighs 143 and is fighting like crazy to help the team. This is only his second year of wrestling and he is doing well.

170: Logan Wilcke, 2-3. Logan had a tough weight class on Saturday. He had a good match against Waukee.

182: Connor Nosbisch, 4-1. Connor’s only loss was a close one to a state qualifier. He is 11-1.

195: Carter Garrington. He missed all of last year with an injury; he is having a great year and is 7-5.

220: Ace Walton, 1-1 Saturday.  Ace had a big win against Ankeny and wrestled well against Webster City’s state place winner.

220: Kyle Willms.  Kyle won in a JV tournament on Friday night and got some valuable experience on Saturday at the Varsity level.

285: Mitchell Jordan.  Mitch showed great improvement from the bottom position on Saturday. Our assistant coaches have done a great job turning him into a very good heavyweight.
