Lion golf team faces tough competition at Spencer Invitational

Dane Waldron fired a 36 to lead Clear Lake (155) to a triangular win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (174) and Newman (179) at Highland Park in Mason City Tuesday, April 14. 

Waldron was three shots better than teammate Thomas Storbeck for the medalist honors.  The Lions’ other three golfers, Jon Carew, Kyle Calaguas and Tanner Storbeck all finished in a tie for third in the medalist race with 40s. Anthony Piscopo also competed for the Lions and had a round of 41.

GHV was led by Grady Umbarger with a 42.  Braedan Johnston and Jordan Babcock fired rounds of 43 and 44 respectively.  Alec Goll rounded out the teams’ scoring with a 45.  Payton Stadtlander had a 48 for the Cards.

Newman Catholic’s Ryan Fischer and Austin Eckenrod each had rounds of 42 to pace the Knights.

 

Spencer Invitational

The Lions got a taste of competition from western Iowa while competing at the Spencer Invitational Saturday at the Spencer Golf and Country Club.  Clear Lake fired a 313 to finish fourth in the 13-team field. 

North Central Conference teams topped the field, as Webster City won with a 306.  Humboldt and Algona Garrigan were next with 307 and the Lions were fourth with 313.  Spencer Purple and Carroll rounded out the top six with scores of 314 and 327.

Clear Lake’s Dane Waldron was third overall.  Tyler Carlson, from LeMars took medalist honors with a 71.  Christian Birdsell was second with a 74,  Waldron also scored 74, along with Donovan Berte from Garrigan and Drew Fielder, of Webster City.

Other counting scores for the Lions came from Tanner Storbeck with a 78 and Thomas Storbeck with 79.  Kyle Calaguas carded an 82.  Also competing was Anthony Piscopo, who had an 84, and Jon Carew with 88.
