Lee and Virginia Melhus
They lived a full and happy life.
Virginia passed away on September 8, 2024 at the age of 90 and Lee followed her on December 27, 2024 at the age of 91.
Their story is one of togetherness.
Both were born in Clarion and met one another at Clarion High School where Lee was a star athlete and Virginia a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. They were married after graduation in 1952 and spent the next 72 years together.
In 1956 they moved their young family to Clear Lake where Lee began a 40-year career as a salesman for the Clear Lake Bakery. With his friendly, outgoing nature he made many friends along his route. Meanwhile, Virginia managed things on the home front. With five young children that was no easy task. They purchased an investment property in the mid 1960’s, Lee’s Modern Cottages, which they operated for 25 years.
Faith, family, and friends were always central to them. For many years at their church, Zion Lutheran, they were ushers and served Community Kitchen. They enjoyed bowling and playing cards with friends and could frequently be found in the stands cheering on their children at many sporting events.
In retirement there was much fun to be had!
They took up golf and enjoyed gardening, buzzing around Clear Lake on their mopeds and socializing with friends in downtown Clear Lake. There were many trips to Tama, Laughlin, and Florida.
Their love of sports led to countless hours of entertainment. Lee was an avid Detroit Lions fan and they both followed the Iowa Hawkeyes and Clear Lake Lions. They attended many of their grandchildren and great grandchildren’s athletic events.
Lee spent many hours woodworking and harvesting walnuts. Virginia loved her morning swim time with friends and playing bingo. Whew, sitting idly was not their thing!
If you are reading this, chances are you played a part in their lives. Go out and live your best life. Be
kind, work hard, and have some fun, just like Lee and Virginia!
It is with saddened hearts we say our goodbye to them but are so very grateful for all the joyous times we shared. Neither one of them wanted a funeral service; they will be buried together in a private graveside where they will be laid to rest by their son, Mitch.
Memorials may be directed to Lee and Virginia’s family, in care of Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 310 1 st Ave North, Clear Lake, where they will be shared with the Clear Lake community.
