Larry Simmer

    Larry Dean Simmer, 69, of Mason City, Iowa formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday, July 12, 2012 at the Chautauqua Guest Home #2, Charles City, Iowa.
    Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Family suggests memorials to Larry Dean Simmer Memorial Fund.

    Larry was born Aug. 4, 1942 in Perry, Iowa the son of Donald and Margaret (Rosander) Simmer. After moving to Clear Lake, he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1960 and was Honorably Discharged in 1963.
    Larry was united in marriage to Kathy Zobel. To this union two children were born, Lindy June and Larry John Gary.
    He was employed at the Joice Locker for many years as a butcher. He later attended and graduated from N.I.A.C.C. with a degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
    Larry was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, but attended a bible study group in Mason City. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, going to the casino, and following the Iowa Hawkeye Basketball Team. Most mornings you could find Larry having coffee with his friends. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids.
    Larry is survived by his daughter, Lindy (Dan) Castronuovo, Clear Lake; son, Larry J. (Jennifer) Simmer, Mason City; two stepdaughters, Sherry (Troy) Thompson, Meservey, Iowa and Debra Berendes, and her significant other, Kevin Bachman, Mason City; mother, Margaret Simmer, Clear Lake; grandchildren, Dalton Pelkey, Draven Monson and Dreann Jackson; Andrew Keller, Mari Wilson, Tyra Wilson, Shaun Wilson, Robert Wilson, Larry Simmer, Matthew Simmer; step grandchildren, Jessica Thompson, Joshua Thompson, Jenna Thompson, Johnathan Thompson, Jordan Thompson, Stephanie Hejlik, Austin Berendes, Haley Bachman and Dylan Bachman and two step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Karen Olinger, Clear Lake, Dixie (Larry) Haugen, Clear Lake, and Sandy (Dale) Katz, Mason City; seven brothers, Richard Simmer, Costa Mesa, Calif., Robert (Colleen) Simmer, Clear Lake, Dennis Simmer, Clear Lake, Francis (Shelley Paulson) Simmer, Ventura, Iowa, Dale Simmer, Mason City, Iowa, Tim Simmer and Tom Simmer both of Clear Lake, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father Donald Simmer; and three brothers, Paul, Donald and Fredrick Simmer.
    Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
