Larry Eugene Schwieger

Larry Eugene Schwieger, 85, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City. 

A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, at Memorial Park Cemetery, 11495 265th St., Mason City, with Mark Doebel officiating.  

The family invites you to come for “One Last Round” at Larry’s Celebration of Life that will be held from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, March 9, at the Clear Lake V.F.W., 219 Main Ave Clear Lake. Full military honors will be conducted by members of the Clear Lake V.F.W Post 4868 at 4 p.m.  

Memorials may be directed in care of the family. 

Larry was born on Sept. 24, 1938. in Mason City, the son of Lyle and Miriam (Grier) Schwieger. Larry went on to graduate from Mason City High School in 1956. Following graduation he joined the United States Air Force on June 15, 1956. During his time in the Air Force, he traveled to Saudi Arabia and Germany until his retirement and honorable discharge on May 15, 1959.  

Soon after Larry was united in marriage to Jean Swaim on April 9, 1961 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; to this union two children were born, Becky and Robert.  

He worked as a lab tech at the Northwestern Cement Plant in Mason City, that later became Holcim (US) INC., for the majority of his working career.  

In his free time Larry enjoyed any activity that required being outside, whether it was fishing, golfing, mowing the lawn, and tending to his vegetable garden. Larry cherished his time at “The Club” with his friends and family having social time and drinks! Most of all, Larry’s greatest love was spending time with his granddaughters and great-grandchildren. 

Larry’s final gift of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.  

Those left to cherish Larry’s memory are his daughter, Becky Schwieger; granddaughters, Stephanie (Richie) Martinson, Tiffany Riley (Matt Perez) and Tasha Goetsch; great-grandchildren, Devon Barkema (Veruca Dorenkamp), Parker Niles (Madie Badker), Taylor Stucky, Raeya Martinson, Cael Stucky, Heyden Anderson, and Lilliauna Molitor; sister, Dianne Blackburn; brother-in-law, Tom Dempsey; as well as a niece and many nephews.  

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Schwieger; son, Robert Schwieger; parents, Lyle and Miriam Schwieger; siblings, Linda True, and Sue Dempsey; and brother-in-law, Jim Blackburn.  

Ward-Van-Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
