Joyce Leonard

 

Joyce Beverly Leonard, 84, Grundy Center, died on Friday, May 10, 2024 at the Unity Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

A funeral service was held at 11 a.m., Friday, May 17, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with Reverend Derek Crawford officiating. Visitation took place one hour prior to the service. Following the service burial was held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. 

Joyce was born on May 3, 1940, in Nevada, Iowa, to John and Edna (French) Brodie. She would go on to graduate from Nevada High School in 1958. Joyce continued her education at UNI for five years. She attended Allen Nursing School earning the title of Registered Nurse. Joyce worked as a Registered Nurse at Unity Point, Allen Hospital, Sartori Memorial Hospital and Covenant Health Care, lastly working in occupational health until her retirement in 2000.

On June 27, 1958, Joyce was united in marriage to David Leonard in Ames, from this union two children were born, Roxanne and Randall. She was Dave’s co-pilot in their airplane, on many adventures together; exploring the world and visiting Spain, Jamaica, Nova Scotia, the Caribbeans, St. John’s Island and many more places. 

In her free time Joyce loved to read, she would go through five books a week! She enjoyed playing cards with her friends and family and trying out new recipes to share, whether they were delicious dinners or sweet treats. 

Those left to cherish Joyce’s memory are her husband, David Leonard; children, Roxanne (Karl Kalvig) Leonard and Randall Leonard; brother, Steve (Marilyn) Brodie; sisters-in-law, Marie (Larry) Hostetler, Pam Vaughn and Pat (Tim) Erickson; along with many nieces and nephews. 

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, John and Edna Brodie; brother, Jerry Brodie; nephews, Jerry John Brodie and Jeff Vaughn. 

Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake is in charge of arrangements.
