Jones qualifies for State; team on to Sub-State
The Clear Lake boys tennis team continued their winning ways in the post season.
Clear Lake traveled to Fort Dodge for boys Districts tennis action Thursday, May 9. The Lions finished second as a team behind Fort Dodge St. Eds. and the Lions’ top player, Sam Jones qualified for the State Meet with a second place finish in singles.
Jones received a first round bye, then defeated Aplington-Parkersburg’s Morgan Uhlenhopp, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals. He picked up a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the semis over Caleb Perkins, of Iowa Falls-Alden. In the finals, Aaron Chalstrom, from St. Ed’s, won the District title, 6-0, 6-0.
Clear Lake’s Andrew Davis won his first round match at Districts, but was eliminated in the second round.
In doubles play, Clear Lake’s Jerry Kockler and Paul Raner finished fourth. After a first round bye, the duo beat a team from Hampton-Dumont, 6-0, 6-1. Despite a good battle in the semi-finals, they went down to the St. Ed’s team of Averill and Laufswieler, 6-4, 6-1. In the consolation round they were defeated, 7-5, 6-4, by a team from Aplington-Parkersburg.
Clear Lake’s other doubles team, Luke Schiller and JJ Theobald, lost in the first round, 6-3, 6-3.
Sub-State
On Saturday, May 11, the Clear Lake boys tennis team hosted Aplington-Parkersburg in boys tennis Preliminary Substate. The Lions came out with a 5-2 win on a very windy day. The Lions advanced to play Saturday, May 18, at Fort Dodge against Spencer in a Sub-state match.
Clear Lake picked up wins in four of six singles matches. Jerry Kockler was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Kollin Cuvelier. Paul Raner topped Richard Uhlenhopp, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. JJ Theobald beat Joey McCally 6-4, 7-5 and Andrew Davis defeated Morgan Uhlenhopp, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
A-P got its wins in the number one singles match, where Nick Oldenburger topped Sam Jones, 6-4, 6-4 and Tim Pollack beat Luke Schiller, 6-4, 6-1.
A doubles win by Theobald and Ian Davis over Aaron VanDyck and Cody Grill, 6-0, 7-5, gave the Lions the overall win.
CL vs. Hampton-Dumont
The Clear Lake boys tennis team ended the regular season with a pair of shut-out wins. The Lions bested Hampton-Dumont on May 6 and Waverly-Shell Rock 9-0 on May 7. - Read More Via e-Edition
