Helen Olson

Helen Olson, 93, of Clear Lake passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.  

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dr. Patrick Hall officiating.  Inurnment will be at Clear Lake Cemetery, Clear Lake. 

Visitation will be held at 9:30 a.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be directed to the family for their discretion.  

The daughter of C. Oscar and Selma (Herrigstad) Lomen, Helen was born June 18, 1921, in Ottosen, Iowa.  Helen graduated from Clear Lake High School and attended Waldorf College and Hamilton Business School.

On Sept. 1, 1946, Helen was joined in marriage to Soren P. Olson at Zion Lutheran Church, in Clear Lake.  Helen and Soren owned bakeries in Hampton, Iowa and Boone, Iowa, before retiring to Horseshoe Bend, Ark., in 1980.  They returned to live in Clear lake in 1999.

Helen enjoyed participating in small group at Zion Lutheran Church, Women’s Club, Progress Club, T.T.T., Elderberries, PEO, and church choir.  Helen loved music and singing.  She was known for her various hat programs.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Soren; her parents, C. Oscar and Selma Lomen; one sister, Gladys Rovang; and one brother, Donald Lomen.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Audrey (Jack) Knight, of Boone, Iowa, and Susan (David) Knippel, of Ames, Iowa; two granddaughters, Chris Knight (Barb Gipe) and Angie (Brian) Goll; two grandsons, Eric Knippel and Dan Knippel; five great granddaughters; four step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
