Hardwork pays off for Peterson

    Clear Lake’s Trudy Peterson has been gaining steam as the season has progressed.  Saturday the Clear Lake sophomore recorded her best time of the season, 15:58, and earned a trip to the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge Saturday.  Peterson placed ninth overall in the Class 3A District meet at Spencer.
    The top three teams and top 10 individuals qualified for the State Meet.
    The Clear Lake girls and boys teams both finished in ninth place in the very tough District.

    “It was a flat course, which I like, but it was windy and chilly so it was tough,” said Peterson.  The sophomore said she was also helped by experience and off-season work.  Peterson and others formed a running club and logged 225 miles over the summer, helping her to improve form a 32nd place District finish last season to ninth this year.  She has set a goal of finishing in the top 25 at Saturday’s State Meet.
    Peterson noted she and teammates Sierra Grieman and Steph Faught consistently pushed each other throughout the season, with any one of the three leading the Lion pack in any given meet. 
    Greiman (16:36) placed 24th at District, while Faught (16:44) was 31st. 
    Other Clear Lake finishers included Katie Ouverson (66th, 18:07), Rebecca Baker (71st, 18:40), Amie Adams (72nd, 18:49) and Kirsten Reineke (79th, 20:13).
    “We were hoping for a higher place at the meet, but it just didn’t work out for us on this night,” said Coaches Jerry Morris and Lothar Meyer.
