Golden Bears control Lions in 79-67 win
After three hotly contested quarters, Algona Garrigan strung together three critical possessions to take control and get a win over the Clear Lake boys Tuesday, Dec. 18. The final score was 79-67.
The teams were locked at 32-32 at halftime, but the Golden Bears outscored the Lions 21-13 in the third and looked to be building momentum heading into the final quarter. The Lions again closed the gap, but late in the game the home team again began to pull away.
“It got to be a seven point game and we started forcing shots. We got into a situation where we had to foul and they made their free throws,” explained Clear Lake Coach Kevin Kahler.
Leading the Garrigan team was John Burns, who scored 38 points in the game and topped the 1,000 point milestone in his high school career.
The Lions were led by Gavin Sheakley and Pete Swenson, who both scored 17. Spencer Davidson was also in double figures with 14. Bryson Hamilton put in eight, Davis Dieken had four, Chase Lester scored three and Luke Schiller and Jack Abbas scored two points apiece.
The loss sent the Lions to 4-3, 4-3 heading into the holiday break. Algona Garrigan improved to 6-3, 5-2. The Lions were slated to host Eagle Grove Friday, but that game was cancelled due to the weather.
