GHV wins one; drops one

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team split a pair of games last week, topping Forest City and falling to Lake Mills.

According to Coach Kelsey Steffens, the Cardinals came into Tuesday night’s match against Forest City, focused, enthused and ready to play volleyball.  

The Cardinals opened the night soundly defeating the Indians, 25-16 in the first game.  Forest City put up more fight in the second and third games, but the result was the same with GHV coming out on top in both, 25-22 and 25-20.

“Key components of our game included our serving and passing.  We were able to run a controlled, aggressive offense, because of the passes we were putting up,” said Steffens.

Leaders in the passing category were Shelby Rayhons with 12, Emily Mathews had nine and Courtney Younge and Mallory Van Oort had six apiece.

Younge also contributed the most assists with 31.  Her hitters of choice were Hannah Lau, who had 15 kills on 28 attempts, and Mathews who was 13/31.  Sola Stephenson was 5/12.

Younge also had a good night at the service line, collecting 20 points and four aces.  Van Oort served up 14 points, while Mathews and Rayhons had 12 points apiece.  Miranda Frederick had 10 points.

Lake Mills 3, GHV 1

The Cardinals knew going into Thursday night’s game against Lake Mills, they would be a handful.  The overall winners of the night were the Bulldogs, but GHV did capture one game.
