GHV team rests injured runners at Eagle Grove

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura cross country team wasn’t quite up to their usual performance at the Eagle Grove Meet held on Tuesday, Oct. 7.  Due to injuries, a few of the top runners were given a rest.

“The boys were running at less than 100 percent. We rested a few guys who have been banged up and battling injuries over the past couple of weeks,” said Coach Eric Jolivette.  “The goal now is to get the guys healthy and back into racing shape.  I was very proud of the guys who stepped up to fill those shoes.”

The GHV boys finished in fourth place in the nine-team competition with 117 points.  Gilbert won the meet with 27 points, followed by Algona, with 49 points and Clear Lake with 105 points.

Derek Brown led the boys with a 13th place finish in a time of 17:46.  Ray Cataldo finished in 19th place with a time of 18:06 and Austin Siegrist ran the race in 18:27, for 22nd place.  Also running varsity was Mason Wirtz, 28th, 19:00; Anthony Siegrist, 35th, 19:27; and Andrew Schreur, 40th, 19:39.

Chase Smith, Logan Dalbeck and Johnathon O’Connor, were the varsity runners not competing in the meet.

The GHV/WH girls team placed seventh in the eight-team field.  Gilbert won with 21 points, followed by Humboldt with 62 points and Spencer with 93 points.

“For the girls, this meet was really our last chance to see competition from 3A schools before the state qualifying meet in a couple of weeks,” said Jolivette.  “I really liked what I saw from Tiara, Kaylee and Rebekah.  We stress the importance of always running with someone during races, so it was great to see those three working together in a pack.”

Maria Gonzalez led the girls team with a time of 17:35, good for a 21st place finish.  Tiara Van Gerpen was 25th with a time of 17:53, while Kaylee Hudspeth and Rebekah Larson were 31st and 35th, with times of 18:09 and 18:24.  Also running varsity was Morgan Graham, who finished in 38th place with a time of 19:06 and Angela O’Hara, who was 49th with a time of 19:52.  Arely Romero was 52nd with a time of 20:33.
