GHV soccer girls hand CAL an 8-0 shut-out

The first game of the season was a real confidence booster for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team, as they picked up a win.  The Cardinals defeated  CAL, 8-0, on Monday, April 6.

“I thought we played really well for the first time out this year.  We attacked the goal well once we got our feet wet and started playing a little,” said Coach Josh Banse.

Jacki Van Oort accounted for three of the eight goals.  Emily Spilman recorded one goal, while Tiara Van Gerpen, Autumn Weaver and Payton Bamrick had one goal apiece.

Coach Banse also praised the play of his defense that did not allow a shot on goal.  The defense was led by Riannan Kadirlik, Brooklyn Laird, Sydney Childress and Rachel Sokol.

“Defense was something we have worked on a lot in practice, just being aggressive and playing the whole match,” said Banse.

Although Mackenzie Haag only played briefly, due to an injury, the coach praised her ability to control the middle.

Weaver led the team in assists, with two.  Alaina Scott, Ashlee Diaz, Van Oort and Spilman all accounted for one assist apiece.

“The whole team played well and it is always nice to get a game under our belts and to win that game is even better,” said Banse.
