GHV girls track team places third at opening meet

It was a beautiful night for a track meet on Friday, April 11, when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team competed in the Bishop Garrigan meet.

The team placed third with 96 points.  Algona won the meet with 188 points and Bishop Garrigan was second with 106 points.  Other teams competing included West Hancock, Forest City and Clear Lake.

“The girls ran well.  We had so many great performances, but it made the girls hungry for more.  They want their times to drop and their distances to increase.  They are ready to work hard and get ready to attack the next meet,” said Coach Dyan Childress.

Dasi Larson started the team out strong with a first place finish in the shot put.  Larson threw the shot 42’.  She also placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 90’11”.  Taylor Vossberg was fourth in the high jump with a jump of 4’8”.

Emily Mathews claimed a first place medal in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.84.

The sprint medley team also claimed the top spot with a time of 1.58.03.  Relay members included Tiara Van Gerpen, Casie Conley, Vossberg and Maddie Tusha.

Earning second place finishes were the following relays: shuttle hurdle team of Sola Stephenson, Miranda Jackson, Stacy Hackenmiller and Mathews, with a time of 1:11.33; the distance medley relay team of Vossberg, Mallory Van Oort, Tusha and Tiara Van Gerpen, 4:42.08; and the 4x100 relay, Tiara Van Gerpen, Mathews, Vossberg and Tusha, 53.35.

Mackenzie Van Gerpen placed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.98.

Brooklyn Laird and Danielle Nelson finished fourth and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles.  Laird’s time was 1:12.37 and Nelson’s time was 1:13.0.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Ades, Morgan Graham, Rachel Weaver and Ellie Meyers finished in fourth place with a time of 11:52.63.

GHV travels to North Iowa on Thursday, April 17, and hosts a meet on Tuesday, April 22.
