The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls soccer team split a pair of games last week.
GHV 4, WC 2
Determination and a will to win pushed the GHV girls to a 4-2 victory over a strong Webster City team on Tuesday, April 14.
“This was a big win for our program,” said Coach Josh Banse. “Webster City has some great forwards and our defense did a great job keeping them in check.”
Emily Spilman scored two of the Cardinals’ four goals. The other two goals were scored by Payton Bamrick and Hannah Sokol.
“Emily continues to get better and better with every time she’s on the field,” said Banse.
Banse also praised the offensive work of Bamrick, Jacki Van Oort, Autumn Weaver and Mackenzie Haag.
“Our offense is starting to work together and learn more about how each other plays,” said Banse.
Goalie Sam Betz recorded six saves for the night.
Bamrick and Riannan Kadirlik each had one assist.
MC 9, GHV 1
A well-oiled Mason City team handed the Cardinals a 9-1 loss on Thursday, April 16.
Emily Spilman was the lone GHV player to score a goal.
Goal keeper Sam Betz had a busy night defending the net. She recorded 10 saves. Morgan Westendorf also saw time at goalie and she recorded four saves.
“I thought the girls fought the whole game,” said Coach Josh Banse. “Despite the result there are always things you can learn about yourself and together as a team. The girls know what those things are and that is a great thing to see as a coach.”
The Cardinals host Clear Lake on Thursday, April 23.
