GHV girls top Clear Lake in soccer action
Garner-Hayfield/Ventura edged the Clear Lake girls soccer team, 1-0, in a game played Thursday, April 23. The win was the first in 11 outings for the Cardinals against the Lions.
“Clear Lake is our biggest rivalry in the sport of soccer. To get this win was a huge step for us as a program,” said GHV Head Coach Joshe Banse. “Clear Lake has a very good established program. We had 14 shots on goal and only allowed three for Clear Lake. We have been working on finishing games in practice and it has paid off.”
“We had opportunities offensively but couldn’t convert,” said Clear Lake Coach Nick DiMarco. “Our defense played well. I look forward to seeing them again on Saturday at their tournament.”

Coach Banse also praised the play of Mackenzie Haage, who recently moved to defense for the Cards. He noted Hannah Sokol controlled the center of the field.
Emily Phalen and Madi Wendel took a total of three shots for the Lions, all in the second half. All three were stopped by GHV’s keeper, Sam Betz.
Ellie Biebesheimer had 10 saves for the Lions. Jessica Faber made one.
