GHV girls on the run at three meets

Competing in three track meets in one week has its advantages and disadvantages, admitted Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track coach Dyan Childress.  She said the experience is good, but by the end of the week the girls are super tired.

Clarion Meet

Despite not scoring a lot of team points, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls track team found cause to hold their heads high and find victories where they could at the Clarion Meet held on Tuesday, April 14.

“We had quite a few season’s best and several all-time personal bests as well,” said Coach Childress.  “We are happy that the girls are breaking their own records and achieving goals.”

Taylor Vossberg placed third in the high jump with a leap of 5’.

The shuttle hurdle relay team also placed third with a time of 1:14.81.  Members of the relay were Miranda Jackson, Shelby Scott, Brooklyn Ossman and Stacy Hackenmiller.

Other events earning team points were:

•High jump: Casie Conley, sixth, 4’4”

•3000 meter run: Rebekah Larson, fifth, 12:51.50

•100 meter hurdles;  Hackenmiller, fifth, 17.56

•Sprint Medley: Betshaida Larson, Mallory Van Oort, Vossberg, Courtney Prescott, fifth, 2:05.88

•4x100 relay:  Conley, Rachel Weaver, Van Oort, Vossberg, fifth, 60.36

•4x400 relay:  Danielle Nelson, Jackson, Hannah Welik, Ossman, sixth, 5:14.97.

“We’re figuring out what events are working best for everybody.  We also have a couple coming back from injury and illness and that will help to put a few more pieces of the puzzle together,” said Childress.

North Iowa Meet

On Thursday, April 16, the Cardinals competed in the North Iowa Meet.  The team was fifth out of six teams competing.

A highlight of the meet was Taylor Vossberg’s first place finish in the high jump with a jump of 5’0”.  The jump qualified Vossberg to compete in the Drake Relays.

“It will be so exciting to see her jumping down at Drake with the best of the best,” said Childress.

The shuttle hurdle team placed second in a time of 1:15.18.  Members of the relay are Miranda Jackson, Shelby Scott, Brooklynn Ossman and Stacy Hackenmiller.  Hackenmiller also placed second individually in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.39.

The Cardinals were dragging by Friday, April 17, when they competed at the Bishop Garrigan Meet after just coming off two previous meets.  GHV was sixth in the eight-team field, with 40 team points.  Algona won the meet with 139 points.

“The nice thing is every race or performance, even when tired, is challenging and changing bodies to help for the next week,” said Coach Childress.

The Cardinals had a couple of events that finished in second place.  Stacy Hackenmiller was second in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.44.  The sprint medley relay team was also second with a time of 2:02.19.  Members of the relay were Jillian Heitland, Mallory Van Oort, Taylor Vossberg and Jacki Van Oort.
