GHV girls roll over three opponents
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls rolled over opponents this week and collected an impressive three huge wins to move their record to 7-1, 9-3.
GHV 51, West Hancock 37
Balanced scoring was the key to GHV’s big win over West Hancock on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Britt.
“Our extremely balanced scoring continues to be a huge plus for us, but it is difficult to prep for an opponent when you don’t know where the scoring is going to come from,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.
The game started a bit shaky for the Cardinals, as the Eagles outscored them 10-6 in the first quarter. GHV picked it up in the second quarter and outscored West Hancock 19-7, for a Cardinal lead of 25-17 at the half.
GHV kept ahead of the Eagles for the rest of the game on their way to the 51-37 victory.
The balanced scoring came from Sydney Younge with nine points, Hannah Lau added eight, while Shelby Rayhons, Bri Bier and Emily Spilman had seven points apiece.
Lau had a fantastic night under the boards collecting 14 rebounds.
Maddie Tusha was also a leader under the boards with nine rebounds. She also collected three steals and two blocked shots and led the team in assists with four.
GHV 71, B-K 42
GHV, who is 8-1 in the conference, hosted Belmond-Klemme, who is 1-7, in a lopsided showdown Friday night.
The Cardinals jumped to an early 11-2 lead, but B-K wasn’t quite ready to roll over and started to connect on their shots, the Broncos closed the gap to only trail by one-point at the end of the first quarter, 14-13.
“We need to start the game with better defense. We have been allowing the opponent too many first quarter points in the last several games,” said Coach Matt Erpelding.
The second quarter proved to be a different story, as GHV went on a 16 point scoring frenzy run and exploded for 27 points in the second quarter for a 41-21 halftime lead.
The third quarter was also all Cardinals. They outscored the Broncos 18-13. The bench took over in the fourth quarter and the game ended in favor of GHV, 71-42.
“Once again we had quality, balanced production from virtually everyone who stepped on the floor,” said Erpelding.
Maddie Tusha was a scoring machine Friday night, collecting a team high 16 points. Other scoring leaders included Hannah Lau and Shelby Rayhons with eight apiece and Emily Spilman chipped in seven.
Sydney Younge led the team under the boards with six. Rayhons and Spilman each had five rebounds.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team in steals with five, while Tusha had three. Both Van Gerpen and Tusha had four assists.
GHV 53, Rockford 35
It was another lopsided win for the Cardinals when they traveled to Rockford Saturday night for their fourth game of the week.
