GHV cross country team makes school history

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura cross country teams stepped it up and got the job done Monday, Sept. 15, at the Ballard Meet. The boys team made school history by winning both the team and individual titles.
 Junior Chase Smith brought home the gold by finishing the race in 17:00. The team scored 48 points to lead the 12-team competition. Eagle Grove was second with 61 points and North Polk was third with 91 points.

 “Ballard is always fun to run, with the big crowds cheering and the large number of schools competing,” said Coach Erik Jolivette. “Most importantly, I thought both teams competed well and improved from our first meet.”
 Rounding out the boys varsity team was Logan Dalbeck, third place, with a time of 17:45; Derek Brown, 12th, 18:37; Ray Cataldo, 14th, 18:43; Austin Siegrist, 18th, 18:48; Johnathan O’Connor, 31st, 19:17; and Andrew Schreur, 49th, 19:55.
 The GHV/WH girl’s team finished in fifth place out of nine teams. Pella won the meet with 28 points, followed by Winterset with 76 and Dallas Center-Grimes with 78 points. The Cardinals finished with 150 points.
 “The girls were able to mix it up with some of the best 3A schools in Iowa, and it was great to finally see what we could do when we were healthy,” said Jolivette.
 Maria Gonzalez led the girls team with a ninth place finish in 16:15. Tiara Van Gerpen was 15th with a time of 17:07. Other varsity runners included: Kaylee Hudspeth, 29th, 18:06; Rebekah Larson, 43rd, 18:46; Taylor Vossberg, 54th, 19:30; and Autumn Weaver, 55th, 19:35.
 “Our varsity runners stepped up and got the job done,” said Jolivette.
 The Cardinals compete on Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Clear Lake Meet held at the Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Ventura. Running begins at 5 p.m.
