GHV continutes to capture wins
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team competed in two triangulars last week and ended the stretch with a 3-1 record.

On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Cardinals traveled to Belmond for a triangular, where they topped Belmond-Klemme, 3-0, but fell to Osage, 3-0.
In the first match against Belmond-Klemme, GHV came out ready to go and won the match, 25-12. The second two matches were a lot closer, but the Cardinals managed the victories, 25-22, and 25-21.
Emily Spilman led the team with nine kills, nine digs, one ace serve and three assists.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Maddie Hejna also had good nights with, Van Gerpen collecting eight kills and Hejna knocked down six. Van Gerpen also had two digs and one assist. Hejna had two assists, one dig and one ace serve.
At the service line, Carlie Knutson and Mallory Van Oort had three ace serves apiece and both served at 100 percent, collecting nine points on serve.
Sydney Younge led the team in assists with 15. She also served at 100 percent with five aces and 10 points on serve.
The Cardinals didn’t fare as well against Osage, but they did put up a fight. The Green Devils beat GHV with scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-20.
Van Gerpen was a team leader with eight kills, five digs and one assist. Spilman collected six kills and four digs and Hannah Lau had five kills.
“The girls are continuing to improve each night,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “The girls are starting to pick up their offense and are really working well together as a team.”

It was a good night for the Cardinals when they hosted a triangular on Thursday, Sept. 18, and collected two conference wins over North Union and North Iowa.
It was a real battle between North Union and GHV. The first match went back and forth to the end with the Cardinals picking up a two point victory, 26-24. GHV played a solid second match and picked up an easy 25-13 victory. North Union didn’t give up and they camp back and outscored the Cardinals, 25-17, in the third match. GHV returned the favor in the final match for the victory, 25-17.
Part of the Cardinals’ success was their solid game at the service line. Six players served at 100 percent, led by Mackenzie Van Gerpen who had four aces and 10 points on serve. Mallory Van Oort had 11 points on serve, while Emily Spilman and Sydney Younge had 10 points on serve and one ace apiece.
Van Gerpen also led the team at the net with 16 kills, followed by Maddie Hejna with 13 and Spilman with 10.
Van Oort was a defensive specialist, collecting 30 digs. Sydney Younge and Van Gerpen had 18 digs apiece and Carlie Knutson dug up 13.
The Cardinals topped North Iowa in three games, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-21.
Van Gerpen had another good night for the Cardinals, collecting 13 kills, three ace serves and eight digs.
Hejna had eight kills, while Spilman sunk five kills.
Van Oort led the defense with 12 digs. Other defensive leaders included Knutson with six digs and Younge had five.
Younge led the team in assists with 15 and Knutson had seven.
At the service line, Van Oort and Younge each had three aces. Van Oort had seven points on serve and Younge had six. Knutson collected seven points on serve and one ace, while Stacy Hackenmiller had six points and one ace.
“It was a great week to earn three conference wins,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.
The Cardinals travel to Forest City on Thursday, Sept. 25. The varsity match begins at 7:30 p.m.
