GHV boys golf team finishing in the middle of the pack
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys golf team has been coming up as the middle man in recent link action.
EG 172, GHV 176, W-H 197
On Monday, April 27, the Cards were runners-up with a 176 behind Eagle Grove who scored 172. West Hancock was third with a 197.
Jacob Grandgeorge was the meet medalist with a 34. GHV’s Braeden Johnston was the runner-up with a 42.
GHV’s other low scores came from Ryan Grunwald with a 44, and Matthew Heineman and Jordan Babcock both shot 45s.
Rounding out GHV golfers was Grady Umbarger, 46, and Payton Stadtlander, 47.
B-G 154, GHV 168, B-K 188
The Cardinals again finished in the runner-up spot when they hosted a home meet on Tuesday, April 28.
Bishop Garrigan won the meet with a 154, while GHV shot a 168 and Belmond-Klemme finished with a 188.
B-G had three golfers that finished with 38s to help their team to the victory.
Umbarger led the Cardinals with a 40, followed by Alek Goll with a 42, and Babcock and Grunwald both shot 43s for GHV. Also golfing for the Cards was Heinemann and Johnston with 46s.
“Bishop Garrigan is a very strong team, which will be the toughest to beat in the NIC Tournament,” said Krause. “We have seven players who have made great improvement this season.”
GHV Quadrangular
On Friday, May 1, the Cardinals hosted a quadrangular with Forest City, Saint Ansgar and Newman. Forest City won the meet with 171. GHV was only one stroke behind with a 172. Saint Ansgar shot a 177 and Newman ended with a 181.
“This was a very competitive meet for all the teams,” said Krause. “Alex Goll shot his best round of the season with a 40. Freshman Matthew Heinemann continues to improve and shot a solid 43.”
Goll tied for runner-up honors with his 40, followed by Heinemann with a 43, Umbarger shot a 44 and Grunwald rounded out the score with a 45. Also golfing was Babcock and Stadtlander with a 47 and 48 respectively.
West Hancock Invite
Saturday was a great day for the Cardinals, as they won the seven-team West Hancock Invitational. GHV’s top five scores were all in the top 13 of the 40-man tournament.
“Everyone of the players shot a season-best score shot by a Cardinal golfer in seven years. It’s great when hard work pays off,” said Krause.
GHV won the Invitational with a 314, followed closely by Eagle Grove with a 317. Clarion-Goldfield was third, shooting a 324.
Umbarger led the Cardinals with a 74. Heinemann, Johnston, Babcock all finished with 80s. Grunwald shot an 81 and Jake Folkers ended with a 97.
