GHV boys claim top honors at Cowboy Relays
It was a good opening meet for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys, as they placed second at the Bob Sanger Relays held in Britt on April 7. Northwood-Kensett won the meet with 134 points, followed by GHV with 125 and Lake Mills was third with 121.
“It was a competitive first meet,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “Now we can re-adjust our practices to fine tune and continue training for the meets ahead.”
GHV had two relay teams capture top honors. The 4x100 team of Kevin Boehnke, Conner Shaw, David Cook and Sam Cataldo, won that event in 45.86. The 4x200 also won with Boehnke, Shaw, Logan Rohlfing and Ezra Marroquin with a time of 1:35.84.
The Cardinals also had several individual winners, including Cook in the 100 meter dash with time of 11.85. Sam Cataldo won two hurdle events. He clocked a 15.72 to win the 110 meter hurdles and won the 400 meter hurdles in 58.65. Chase Smith won the 3,200 meter run in 10:07.27. Ezra Marroquin had a jump of 18’09.75” to win the long jump.

•Shuttle hurdle: Scholl, Cook, Forry, Cataldo, third, 1:05.54
•Distance medley: Forry, Scholl, Mehmen, Schnieders, fourth, 4:21.52
Clarion-Goldfield Meet
Friday night was stellar for the GHV boys track team. The Cardinals won the seven-team Cowboy Relays with 121 points, followed by Clear Lake with 116 and Forest City with 104.
Team members recorded some personal best times and scored in every event but one.
“The dedicated work the boys are putting in at practice is showing at the meets,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. Although we have only had two meets so far, there has been many personal bests this season. Our goal is to keep everyone healthy and continue to compete and improve.”
The Cardinals had five individual and one relay all capture first place finishes. Ezra Marroquin got the night off right with a first place in the 400 yard dash with a time of 52.97. Derek Brown was also first in the 1,600 with a time of 4:56.51. Sam Cataldo picked up two individual championships, one in the 110 high hurdles, 15.46, and one in the 400 hurdles, 58.10. Logan Dalbeck finished at the head of the pack in the 3,200 in 10:34.66. The distance medley team of Harley Forry, Zac Scholl, Nich Mehmen, and Dalbeck finished in first with a time of 3:56.94.
A highlight of the meet was a one-two placement in the 1600 yard run. Cataldo was second behind Brown in 4:57.57.
