GHV baseball team moves record to 5-16

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team moved its record to 5-16 with one win and three losses last week.

Newman 13, GHV 1
 It was a tough night for the Cardinals when Newman Catholic pounded out 12 hits and 13 runs to shut down GHV 13-1. The Cards could only manage three hits off Newman pitcher Bryce Ball.
Payton James took the loss for the Cardinals. He pitched three innings and recorded two strike-outs, five walks, six hits and six runs. Josh Theobald and Cory Boeckman also saw time on the mound. Theobald walked two, gave up three hits and five runs. Boeckman struck out one, walked three, gave up three hits and two runs.
James, Boeckman and Holden Hutcheson were the only Cardinal players to connect on a hit. Hutcheson’s hit knocked in Jake Wolf in the second inning for GHV’s lone run.

Bishop Garrigan 12, GHV 5

The Cardinals traveled to Bishop Garrigan on Tuesday, June 24, for a double header. GHV was at least consistent in the games, scoring five runs in each contest, unfortunately for the Cards, the Golden Bears were able to get more runs across the plate in both games.
Bishop Garrigan recorded two wins against the Cardinals, 12-5 and a closer match-up, 6-5.
The Golden Bears came out strong in the 12-5 game, recording six runs in the first inning. The fourth inning was another big one for B-G, scoring five runs. GHV was consistent, scoring two runs in the second inning and one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Alex Goll took the loss on the mound in the 12-5 game. He pitched four innings and gave up 12 hits and 12 runs. Kaleb Bruggeman pitched two innings, striking out one and giving up two hits.
Braden Meints led the team on offense, collecting two hits, a crowd pleasing homerun brought in one runner for the Cardinals. Nick Joynt connected on a double for the Cardinals.
Scoring one run apiece was Holden Hutcheson, Spencer Shaw and Harley Forry.
Holden Hutcheson was the losing pitcher in a nine inning 6-5 loss. He walked six and gave up seven hits. Spencer Shaw also saw some time on the mound. He walked one, gave up one hit and one run.
Josh Theobald and Payton James led the offense with three hits apiece. Theobald connected on two doubles, while James had one. Theobald scored two runs for the Cardinals and James scored one.
Spencer Shaw connected on one hit that collected two RBIs. Jake Wolf had two hits and scored one run, while Ryley Kozisek scored one run.

GHV 11, Lake Mills 2
It was a good night on the road for the Cardinals, as they topped Lake Mills 11-2 in a North Iowa Conference showdown.
GHV opened strong, taking a 6-1 lead by the end of the fourth inning. The Cards went on to score two runs in the fifth and three runs in the seventh, while holding the Bulldogs to just one more run in the seventh inning.
The Cardinal bats were blazing. They collected 12 hits in the seven inning win.
Josh Theobald and Braeden Meints carried the big bats for the night. They each recorded three hits and they each had two doubles. Meints hits also knocked in five runners. Alex Goll had two hits on the night and Jake Wolf connected on a double.
Theobald led the team in runs with four. Goll and Meints each scored two runs, while Payton James, Wolf, Cade Baker, Spencer Shaw and Jim Ermer all had one run a piece.
Theobald was the winning pitcher. He threw all seven innings, striking out five, and giving up six hits.
The Cardinals travel to Waterloo on Saturday, July 5, for a tournament. They are home on Tuesday, July 8, against Central Springs. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
