G-H/V volleyball falls to Green Devils in Conference Tournament
After falling to the Osage Green Devils in the conference season opener, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team was looking forward to a rematch at the North Iowa Conference Tournament held on Monday, Oct. 1, in Garner. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the outcome was the same, with the Green Devils winning the match, 30-28, 25-10 and 26-24.
“We simply didn’t play well against them back in August and we wanted an opportunity to prove we were a better ball team,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.
In set one, Courtney Younge knocked down two ace serves to start a nine point run and give the Cards a 19-12 lead. Osage returned the favor and inched back to within one, 25-24. Each team fought off set-point until the final two points were scored by Osage to capture the 30-28 win.
With the wind knocked out of their sails, the Cards struggled in set two, as the Green Devils picked up their second victory, 25-10.
G-H/V regrouped for set three and took an early 12-4 lead before Osage narrowed the score to 18-12 and then evened it up at 20-20. From there it was a race for the final five points. Missed serves by both teams kept the score close. It was Osage who garnered the final two points and the 26-24 victory and a chance to play in the conference championship.
