G-H/V Cardinals top A-P in season soccer opener

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team opened the 2013 season with a win against Aplington-Parkersburg Thursday, April 4.  Although it was the Cardinals home opener, the game was played at Waldorf College in Forest City, due to wet conditions.

“We started off a little rusty, but soon found our legs,” said Coach Eric Williams.

Jimmy Ermer got the scoring underway for the Cards when he scored on a strong cross to the middle to go into half time with a lead of 1-0.

Three minutes into the second half, A-P tied the score, 1-1.  Brad Nedved came through for G-H/V by scoring on a strong kick in the middle to capture the win.

“We played very strong and for being so early in the season we really moved the ball well,” said Williams.  “Strong passes, great defense and hard effort won us this game.”

Starting for the Cardinals were Nathan Hrubes, Jimmy Ermer, Mark Wellik, Leonard Heurtebize, Blake Johnson, Allen Devora,  Aaron Boehnke, Alex VanGerpen, Teddy Zrostlik, Keith Schwickerath and Brad Nedved.  Also seeing action were Josh Miller, Patrick Terhark, Logan Ryerson, Dalton Basinger and Jared Wellik.

“We are really looking forward to the rest of the season and feel that we have a great team,” said Williams.

The Cardinals play at Clear Lake on Thursday, April 11, match time is 5:30 p.m.
