G-H/V boys soccer team falls to Humboldt Wildcats, 3-2

It was a hard-fought, aggressive match when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura boys soccer team hosted Humboldt on Friday, May 10.

The Wildcats found the net early in the game to take a 1-0 lead.  The Cardinals got on the board with a great throw-in from Alex Van Gerpen to Jimmy Ermer, 1-1.

In the second half, G-H/V again found themselves down one goal with eight minutes left in the match.  With two minutes remaining in the game, the Cardinals again found the net when Van Gerpen threw the ball in toward the goal causing, Teddy Zrostlik and the Wildcat goalie to fight for possession.  The ball bounced into the air, where Aaron Boehnke found the back of the net, sending the game into overtime.

With one minute left in the first half of overtime, Humboldt scored on a penalty kick and the match was over, 3-2.

“Although we lost this one, it was a great match and was really fun to be a part of,” said Coach Eric Williams.  “I have a lot of hope for us in the post-season, because we are finally playing like a team.”

G-H/V goalie Nathan Hrubes had 12 saves and three goals scored against him.  Zrostlik had two shots on goal, while Ermer, Brad Nedved and Van Gerpen each had one shot on goal.
