Emma Teeter Cecil Teeter

Emma Elizabeth Teeter, 95, died on May 3, 2010 and Cecil Glenn Teeter, 96, died on Dec. 16, 2014.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, in La Porte City, Iowa.  Family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.  Inurnment will be held in the West View Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Diego Post #207.

Emma Elizabeth Teeter

Emma was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Clear Lake, to Christian and Martha (Salling) Larsen, both natives of Denmark who emigrated and became citizens of the USA.

She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1934, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Mason City, Iowa, for nine years, as chief evening operator and commercial office representative. 

She married Cecil Glenn Teeter on June 23, 1942, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Emma lovingly raised their three children, moved their household nine times over the years, and volunteered in their local communities, including church Women’s Circle, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, daycare for physically disabled children, and Head Start.

After a granddaughter was diagnosed with Celiac Sprue in 1982, she founded the Celiac Sprue Association of Greater Kansas City, and assisted chapters in Phoenix, Omaha, and Des Moines. During their retirement in Mesa, Az., she volunteered with the Phoenix area Celiac Sprue Association and the Child Crisis Center of Mesa. 

 

Cecil Glenn Teeter

Cecil was born Oct, 29, 1918, in La Porte City, to Glenn and Margaret (Sawyer) Teeter.

He graduated from La Porte City High School in 1936, attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa), and was a member of Alpha Delta Alpha fraternity.

He married Emma Elizabeth Larsen on June 23, 1942, in West Palm Beach.

Cecil served in the US Army from 1941 to 1946, as Second Lieutenant, Signal Corps, and Captain, Officer Reserve Corps. During WW II he served in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany, attached to the Air Corps. He was recalled to active duty from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean Conflict, serving as Company Commander at Camp Gordon, Ga., and Camp Cooke, Calif.

Cecil became a manager for AT&T in several departments during his 38-year career. He worked in Iowa City, Kansas City, New York City, Washington, DC, and again in Kansas City.

He was a life member of American Legion Post #207 in La Porte City, a member of the church Men’s Club, and served three years as an elected officer of the Retired Telephone Pioneers. During retirement they lived in Roeland Park, Kan., Mesa, Ariz., and Lawrence, Kan.

Survivors include a son, Steven Teeter (Sharon); two daughters, Marilyn Teeter and Patricia Zara (George); Cecil’s brothers, Clare, Truman, and James (Maria); Cecil’s sister, Dorothy Frericks (Marvin); a sister-in-law, Ann Larsen; grandchildren, Jessica Romaine, Alice Teeter, Kellie Kandybowicz, and Glenn Teeter (Maria); step-grandchildren, Elizabeth Alexandre and Michael Zara; great-grandchildren, Adrian and Rhiannon Romaine and Aristeo and Javier Teeter Rangel; and many nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren.

They were preceded in death by their parents; a grandchild, Patricia’s daughter, Ann Kandybowicz; a step-grandchild, Katherine Zara; Emma’s sister and her husband, Marie and Barney Kogan; Emma’s brother, Carl; Cecil’s brothers and their wives, William and Cecile and Robert and Maxine; a sister-in-law, Juanita (Mrs. Clare) Teeter; and two nephews.

La Porte City Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
