Donald Tice

 

Donald “Don” Fred Tice, 91, 821 6th Ave. S., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at  Cedar Health in Charles City, Iowa.  

     A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating.  Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery.  Memorials may be given to the Donald F. Tice Memorial Fund.  

     Don was born Nov. 3, 1921 in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Charles and Mollie (Schwartz) Tice.  He grew up in the Clear Lake and Ventura area, graduating from Ventura High School in 1939.  He worked at a bomber plant in Omaha during World War II where he met his wife.   He married Ruth Heppler Jan.1, 1945 at Omaha, Neb.  He also drove a taxi in Omaha.  They moved back  to Clear Lake in late 1947 where he worked for the Clear Lake Bakery in pastries and later as their mechanic for many years.  He then went to work for Jim Hanson Ford as a mechanic.  He taught his family good strong work ethics and family values.  He never learned the word “no”.

     Don loved woodworking and making things for the family.  He was always there to help with family projects.  He was a jack of all trades.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

     Don is survived by his wife, Ruth Tice, Charles City, Iowa; four children, Lee (Judy) Tice, Bartlett, Ill., Dave (Nadine) Tice, Charles City, Linda (Jerry) Umbaugh, Queen Creek, Ariz., and Sally (Roger) Hoy, Pine City, Minn.; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Paul Hernes, Russellville, Ark.; and brother, Harvey Tice, Birmingham, Ala.

    Don was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers and sisters; and daughter, Kathryn Hernes.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
