As course owners celebrate 30 years, they invite the public to ‘remember the fun’

Tom and Sheila Sherman are celebrating 30 years as owners of Oak Hills Golf Course in Clear Lake this summer.  And perhaps more than ever, they invite golfers-- young and old, experienced or novices, to visit the course.

 “Golf, in general, has been down.  Many people are just not playing anymore for one reason or another,” said Tom.  “They need to remember the fun they had.”
 Since he was a young child, Tom’s definition of fun has included the game of golf.  He “played constantly” as an eight and nine-year-old when his father, Gene, ran the former All-Veterans Golf and Social Club.  The family left to live in South Dakota for a few years and own a golf driving range, but returned to call Clear Lake their permanent home.  Tom experienced great success as a high school golfer, beginning his prep career as an eighth grader and qualifying for the State Tournament as an individual his senior year.  He finished fourth.  He continued to play the game on the college, and even pro level, before once again returning to Clear Lake.
