Corrie Born

Corrie Born, 90, of Sioux Center, Iowa, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

A funeral service was held Monday at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center with Rev.  A.T. Ver Gunst officiating.  Interment followed in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Kornelisje (Corrie) Born was born to Jan and Aaltje Neijmeijer on Jan. 29, 1923 in Doornspijk, the Netherlands. She was raised as a young girl in rural Holland. She took a sewing job at age 15.  She met her husband, Gerrit, when he was visiting her cousin and boarding in their home.

She married Gerrit Jan Bom on March 16, 1944 in Oosterwolde, the Netherlands. They spent their first few married years in the Netherlands. In 1949, Corrie and Gerrit immigrated to the United States with their two sons, Abe and Adrie. Shortly after their arrival they settled in Hull, Iowa, where Gerrit was employed by the City of Hull from 1953 to 1979. Corrie was able to stay home and be a full-time mom to Abe and Adrie. She lovingly cared for them and will be remembered as a person who loved dogs, birds, and flowers. She loved trees and would enjoy spending quiet times enjoying nature. For many years, Corrie and Gerrit spent their summer weeks at Round Lake, Minn. They also enjoyed many winters in Arizona. The children and grandchildren have fond memories of spending family time at the lake and enjoying those special times there. In 1989, Corrie and Gerrit moved to Sioux Center. In March of 2008, Corrie moved to Kosgrove where she was lovingly cared for by the staff.

Although unable to physically attend church, Corrie was faithfully visited by the consistory of Netherlands Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

Surviving Corrie are her two sons, and daughter-in-laws, Abraham “Abe” and Linda Born of Clear Lake, and Adrie “Dutch” and Shirley Born of Sioux Center.  Corrie had three grandchildren, Dr. Brent Born and his wife, Tammy, of Kenyon, Minn., Sheila De Jong and her husband, Kelly, of Sioux Center, and Alan Born and his wife, Loran, of Pella, Iowa; 13 great-grandchildren, Gerrit Born, Madison Born, Corrie Born, Adrie Joshua “AJ” Born, Brayden and Carly Sutherland, Keaton, Samuel, Maria and Elizabeth De Jong, and Aaron, Nathan and Kellyn Born.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerrit Jan; and two sisters, Aaltje Visch and Hendrikje Uit de flesh.  Also preceding her was Katelyn De Jong, a great-granddaughter.
