Collision on icy road blamed for crash killing two teens

A thick layer of glare and black ice was likely the cause of a deadly crash in North Iowa Saturday which killed two teens, including a Garner-Hayfield/Ventura student.

The victims were identified as 19-year-old Tiffany Banta, a graduate of Garner-Hayfield High School, and 15-year-old Chyann Banta, a freshman at GHV.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, a 2004 Pontiac driven by Tiffany Banta was heading eastbound on Hancock County Road B-14 when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and collided with a westbound 1998 Ford Explorer driven by 68-year-old Steven Hanna, of Crystal Lake.   The accident occurred east of Crystal Lake in Hancock County.  Both vehicles ended up in the north ditch.

Both Tiffany and Chyann Banta were pronounced dead at the accident scene.

Hanna escaped injury in the accident.

Forest City Police officers, Fire Department and Ambulance were on scene, along with the Iowa State Patrol and Hancock County officials.

The Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond is in charge of services.  Service information appears on page 3 in this edition.
