CLHS students use talents to meet challenge posed by library
Clear Lake High School students from Graphic Design classes recently helped to solve a real life challenge in their community.
The Board of the Friends of the Clear Lake Public Library sought suggestions from two Graphics Arts classes along with their instructor, Shirlee Taylor. The library was in need of a new design that would draw patrons to their online resources. They would like to increase the use of downloadable music, magazines, e-books and other electronic programs free to patrons of the library.
Eight ideas were presented to the board in early April in a PowerPoint presentation given by Mrs. Taylor. The students’ original drawings and computer-generated designs gave the board many creative ideas and concepts from which to choose.
“I was very impressed with their knowledge of symbolism in advertising and the meaning behind their designs,” said Nancy Bleuer, a board member. “They approached their artwork and logos with a lot of well-thought-out ideas. What great talent they’ve shown.”
Another board member, Jill Bale, commented, “The students’ designs gave us a good starting point for a more cohesive approach to marketing our online services.”
A committee of board members and Assistant Library Director Martha Boyes will choose a design from those presented. It will ultimately be used on the library’s website and in other print media.
