Clear Lake wrestlers attend Luther College Team Wrestling Camp
Clear Lake High School wrestling team participates in Luther’s Team Wrestling Camp
The Clear Lake High School wrestling team participated in the 2011 Luther College Team Wrestling Camp in Decorah, Iowa, from July 6-9. There were over 240 individuals participating in the team camp from four states.
The 2011 Luther wrestling camps, directed by Luther head wrestling coach Dave Mitchell, have grown into some of the largest and most recognized camps in the Midwest. In 2010, more than 1,000 athletes participated, representing more than 60 teams from seven states.
Recent clinicians have included several Olympian, NCAA champion and All-American wrestlers, including Cale Sanderson, Brandon Slay and Brent Metcalf.
Campers at the 2011 camps participated in team building activities, intensive “Train Like a Norseman” sessions, technique sessions and live wrestling sessions. The camp closed with an individual tournament.
Clear Lake went 5-5 in the duals and competed well for a young team. Four of Clear Lake’s loses came within four team points. Ryan Schmalen and Logan Kellogg, members of the Lions wrestling team, earned Wrestler of the Day honors from Luther camp counselor Evan Obert.
Kellogg finished his camp by going undefeated, compiling a 16-0 record. Kellogg beat a state champion from Kansas and other state qualifiers.
