Clear Lake softball team returns favor and beats Algona

The Clear Lake softball team dropped three games, then finished the week with a well played game which gave the Lions a win over Algona just one night after they were thumped by the same team.

Eagle Grove 3, CL 2

Trailing 3-1 after four innings, the Lions came roaring back and scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning in a conference battle played June 21 at Eagle Grove.  The Eagles stiffened their defense and held on for the 3-2 win.

“This game was a heartbreaker in the end,” said Lions Coach Megan Young.  In addition to holding the Eagles to three runs, the coach said she was pleased her team had just one error in the game.  The team played aggressive, but had two girls get caught stealing and one made it safe out of the pickle, she added.

The Lions had eight hits in the game, paced by Hannah Bartlett with three, including a double, good for an RBI.  Megan Loux, Jenna Peterson, Kaitlyn Pitzen, Annie Snyder and Erin O’Tool each had a hit.  Loux was also credited with an RBI.

Newman 9, CL 0

The Lions committed 11 errors between the third and fifth innings, helping Newman Catholic to a 9-0 victory  Tuesday, June 25.  

“This was a tough game for us mentally,” said Coach Megan Young.  “The errors resulted in the nine runs from Newman.  The girls have been challenged to step up and play.”

Pitcher Sara Barlow gave up nine runs, four of them earned, on 12 hits.  She struck out three and walked five.

The Lions’ offense also lacked spark.  Four players provided six hits in the game.  Megan Loux and Kaitlyn Pitzen each had two hits, while Jenna Peterson and Carney Frahm had one apiece.

Algona 16, CL 6

The Lions were without many of their usual starters Thursday, June 27, at Algona.  Junior varsity players stepped up to help the team score six runs, but Algona rapped 16 hits on their way to a 16-6 North Central Conference victory.

Coach Young said her JV players made excellent plays with only two errors in the game.

“We had players in new spots tonight.  Overall,the girls stepped up and played a good game.  We are hitting the ball hard, it just seems to be line drives into the opponents’ gloves.  We had two very unfavorable calls from the umpires, which changed the pace of the game,” said the coach.
