Clear Lake shuts out Cardinals in girls soccer action
The Clear Lake girls played their most complete game of the year and posted a 7-0 victory over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Tuesday, May 20.
“The offense and defense worked very well together, passing was crisp and defense was solid,” said Coach Nick DiMarco.
The Lions’ Emily Phalen recorded a hat trick plus one, scoring four goals against the Cardinals. She began her scoring feat in the 17th minute, and was assisted by Logan Anderson. Phalen’s second goal came in the 37th minute off of a great pass by Clear Lake’s foreign exchange student, Rachel Matthew. The half ended in a 2-0 score.
The second half started as the first half ended, with Phalen scoring again in the 43rd minute. The goal was scored off of a good through ball from Anderson. Phalen capped off her scoring feat in the 57th minute, again assisted by Anderson.
The Lions weren’t quiet for long. Anderson made the fifth goal of the night one minute later. The sixth goal of the game came off the foot of defender, Erin O’Tool, in the 78th minute, utilizing her outstanding dribbling skills to seal the deal.
The final goal of the evening was scored by Madi Wendel with a strong kick from a difficult angle.
Eli Biebesheimer recorded one save on the evening, as did Brea Wagler.
“The girls played well despite missing some key starters due to the State Track Meet,” said GHV Coach Josh Banse. The coach noted the team had been off for 17 days prior to the match due to weather postponements. “It was hard to get things rolling. Carlie Knutson and Brooklyn Laird really stepped it up on the defensive side and got some key varsity experience,” added Banse.
Goalie Sam Betz had 10 saves for the Cardinals. Emily Slilman took four shots on goal.
Clear Lake and GHV will meet again in the opening round of Regional play, Tuesday, June 3, starting at 6 p.m. in Garner.
