Clear Lake hosts top cross country teams
During the 2014 Homecoming Week, the Clear Lake cross country teams hosted their annual home meet at the Regular Baptist Camp. The conditions were perfect, with 70 degrees and a light wind off the lake. Twelve teams came to compete at the rather challenging course.
Humboldt won the girls’ team competition with 56 points, followed by Newman with 64 points and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock with 119 points. The Clear Lake girls took ninth place with 255 points.
The boys’ team title was captured by GHV with 48 points, followed closely by Eagle Grove and West Fork with 56 and 63 points respectfully. The Clear Lake boys finished fifth with 156 points.
The top three finishers for the varsity girls included: Maddie Kampen, of Humboldt, 16:10; Talia Rowe, West Fork, 16:58; and Taylor Hauser, Newman, 17:03. The top three finishers for the varsity boys included: Chase Smith, GHV, 16:25; Peyton Twedt, West Fork, 17:00; and Jacob Hansen, West Fork, 17:31.
Jones and Faught lead Clear Lake teams
Clear Lake’s Gretchen Jones continues to finish each race near the top of the leader board. The freshman finished fifth in 17:04, only six seconds out of second place.
“She did a great job battling more experienced runners the entire race and showed her grit by not backing down,” said Coach Nick DiMarco.
Fellow freshmen Tali Tesar, Molly Dugan, Krystal Lu, and Irene Swanson rounded out the scoring, with Tesar finishing 55th, Dugan 63rd, Lu 65th and Swanson finishing 67th.
“All five girls are showing steady improvement as we enter the midway point of our season,” said Coach DiMarco.
The Lion boys were paced by Ryan Faught, who ran a great race earning an 8th place medal in a time of 17:50.
“Ryan’s hard work continues to pay off, as his times are consistently improving,” said the coach.
Alex Enabnit was second for the Clear Lake boys with a 22nd place finish in 18:50. Spencer Orr was next in for the Lions, finishing in 35th place.
“Spencer’s time of 19:19 inches him closer to a mid-18 minute finish that he has set for his goal,” said DiMarco.
Next for the Lion’s was Kaleb Froiland, finishing in 44th place, Sam Pedelty 47th, and Sam Jones in 56th place. Dylan Schuchard, running in place of Tanner Storbeck who missed the race due to illness, ran admirably and really helped support the team. He finished 58th in a time of 20:15.
