Clear Lake girls pick up two wins

Clear Lake’s softball team split games with North Central Conference foes this week and dropped a game to Class 5A Mason City.  The Lions now stand at 3-8-1 on the season.  Coach Megan Young says the week ahead holds many opportunities for success, with the team scheduled to play six games in five days.  After facing Humboldt and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura to start the week, they will be at 

Clarion-Goldfield Wednesday, to take on Bishop Garrigan and Forest City Thursday and then get back on the road to Eagle Grove Friday.

Pitcher Sara Barlow had one of her best outings and her team backed her up with nine hits and nine runs against Clarion-Goldfield Monday, June 10.  The Lions were 9-1 winners in the North Central Conference game.

“We had more ground balls and line drives tonight that resulted in being on base,” said Coach Megan Young.  “We will continue to work to improve our batting and fielding strategies. We came out ready to take a win tonight.”

Barlow pitched an excellent game, only giving up seven hits to 28 batters faced.  Fifty-two of her 72 pitches thrown were strikes, noted the coach.  She recorded four strikeouts and walked none.

The Cowgirls plated their only run in the first inning.

“After the first inning, we settled down and got into the Lion spirit of the game.  Our fielding is continually strong as we see very few errors each game.  We, as coaches, are very proud of the efforts of the girls,” added Young.

Freshman Tori Fyfe and sophomore Carney Frahm each had two hits in the victory.  Frahm’s hits were both doubles.  She collected one RBI.   The Lions totaled nine hits in game and stole an amazing 14 bases.  Freshman Erin O’Tool led the way with five stolen bases.

Bishop Garrigan tallied four runs in the first inning, but Mother Nature was the winner Wednesday.  The game was rained out after one and will be re-started June 20 at 3 p.m.

Mason City made quick work of the Lions Thursday, June 13.  The Mohawks won, 12-0, in three innings.
