Clear Lake and G-H/V soccer teams square off in triangular meet

The Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura soccer teams squared off at a triangular event Saturday in Garner.

CL 8, GH/V 2

In the first match of the day, Clear Lake topped the host school, 8-2. 

Logan Anderson scored three goals, Ivy Hogg and Emily Phalen each had two and Megan Kopriva scored one in the Lion victory.  

Riley Brinkman defended five shots in goal, while Clear Lake made 24 shots at the Cardinals’ net. GH/V keeper Samantha Bets had 22 saves in the match.  

“Garner set up a strong defense in the first half, with only two goals in by us with good defense,” said Coach Meyer.  

GH/V became the first team to score on the Lions this season with goals from Mack Haag and Emily Spilman.  Autumn Weaver got an assist. Their first goal came at the start of the second half.  The other came on a free kick in front of the Lions’ goal against Ellie Biebesheimer, in relief of Brinkman.  

Clear Lake scored six goals in the second half, with sweepers Madison Faber and Summer Tannahill setting up Emily Willms so she could forward the ball to the offense.

CL 2,  Hudson 0

The Lions resumed shutout play in their second match of the day. Hannah Bartlett and Logan Anderson each scored to give the Lions a 2-0 win over Hudson, the 10th ranked team in Class 1A.   

Coach Meyer said the goals in each half should be credited to the defense of Erin O’Tool,  Emily Willms, Madison Faber and Summer Tannahill.

“Time after time they feed the offense chances to score,” said the coach.

Goal keeper Riley Brinkman had six saves in the win.

The Lions had 15 shots on goal.  

“It was a good experience for the team to play Hudson in a weekend format and determine if we can play 120-160 minutes  of soccer in great weather,” said Meyer.

Hudson 2, GH/V 1 (OT)

The Cardinals proved they have steadily improved in their second season, pushing 10th ranked Hudson to a 2-1 score in overtime.  

“Our girls showed in this game thay they will compete with the best,” said GH/V Coach Josh Banse.  

The coach praised the play of goalie Samantha Betz, along with Emily Spilman and Mackenzie Haag up front and Jesslyn Prohaska in the stopper position.

“Hats off to our defense.  It was definitely the best game they have had all year,” said Coach Bense. “We had some key players out, with subs playing very well in place of them.  Those girls were Payton Bamrick, Renae Lau, Sydney Childress and Danielle Nelson.  It was a great day for us and a step in the right direction.”
