CL wrestlers celebrate season at Awards Banquet

The Clear Lake wrestling program celebrated a highly successful 2014-15 season with its Awards Banquet Sunday at the high school cafeteria.  The Lions (22-17, 4-3) finished the season as Sectional, District and Regional champions.  The team placed seventh in the State Dual Tournament and was fifth in the State Traditional Tournament with four qualifiers, two of which became state champions.

Brennen Doebel, state champion at 113-pounds, set a new school record for most wins in a season.  He finished his senior season with a 50-1 record. Joe Colon held the previous record for most wins in a season with 46 (2008-09).  In addition to his state title, Doebel was also a North Central Conference champion this year.

Clear Lake’s other state champion this year, sophomore Ryan Leisure, was 48-1 this season, including an NCC title.

Other notable achievements included Ryan Faught, a junior wrestling at 145-pounds, winning his third North Central Conference championship.  He is on course to become only the fifth four-time NCC champion in conference history.  Faught was among the Lion state qualifiers this season.

Ryan Schmalen finished third at State at 120-pounds and ended his season season with a 43-2 record.  With a career record of 125-22, he ranks 11th in the program’s best career win percentage at 86 percent.

Doebel and Schmalen rank eighth and ninth respectively in Clear Lake wrestling career records (50 or more wins).  Doebel was 128-43 and Schmalen was 125-22.
