CL softball team picks up first win of the season against Algona

The Clear Lake girls softball team earned its first win of the season during a busy holiday week.  The Lions also dropped five contests to various North Iowa powers.

    One bad inning doomed the Lions against Humboldt Friday, May 25.  The Wildcats scored six innings in one frame on their way to a 10-3 victory.

    “We played so well in this game that I hardly consider it a loss. We had one rough inning in which Humboldt scored six runs, otherwise we played great defense and hit the ball well on offense,” said Lions Coach Nicki Petersburg.  “The only difference was that Humboldt’s hits found gaps and ours didn’t.”
    The Lions had Sara Barlow on the mound.  Just back from an injury, the junior pitched a strong game.  She struck out three and walked three while giving up 11 hits. 
    Humboldt got six of their runs in the first inning, then added single scores in the second and third, capped by a two-run sixth inning.
    The Lions scored once in the first, then were held scoreless until the fifth.
    Kaitlyn Pitzen had three hits for the Lions and scored twice.  She smacked a double and triple which brought in two runs.  Tori Fyfe and Ryan Pierce had two hits apiece, with Fyfe getting a triple and Pierce a double.  Annie Snyder brought in a run for the Lions on a single.  Hailey Grell also reached base on a single.
    
CL 9, Algona 8
    The Lions roared back from a 4-2 deficit and scored six runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth on their way to a 9-8 win Tuesday, May 29.
    “I was very pleased with our perseverance in this game.  We were losing for most of it, yet the girls never quit believing,” said Coach Petersburg.  “We had a few more defensive errors that I would like, but we didn’t let that get us down like it has in years past. I’m very proud of how we’re growing and developing as a team.  Its great that all the little detail things we’ve been working on for years - confidence, getting the lead runner out, hitting the ball solid, is finally paying off.”
    The Lions pounded out 11 hits in the game, with four players getting two apiece.  Kaitlyn Hayes led the way, bringing in three runs with her two hits, one being a double. Erin O’Toole, Jenna Peterson and Annie Snyder were the other big sticks for the Lions.
