CL girls tennis team ends impressive season

The Clear Lake girls tennis team closed out its regular season with a pair of wins and a loss to highly-regarded Waverly-Shell Rock.  The Lions ended the season with an impressive 8-2 record.

For the second time this season the Lions posted a win over Webster City.  Coach Mary Jo Peterson noted the scores were closer this time, but the Lions prevailed, 9-0.  Despite the lopsided team score, several match scores were close.

In the opening match, Jenna Peterson won a third set super tie-breaker after splitting sets, 4-6, 6-4.  Her super tie-breaker score was 10-1.  Kaitlyn Pitzen was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in the number two match, but number three player, Carly Ouverson, was pushed.  After being down 2-5, she fought back to win, 7-5, 6-2.  Alexis Atkinson won, 6-4, 6-4 at number four.  Courtney Anderson played patiently to outlast her opponent, 7-5, 6-4.  Drew Davis, playing in her first varsity singles match, won 6-0, 6-4.

The doubles team of Peterson/Ouverson won 6-1, 6-4; Pitzen/Taylor Julsen  cruised, 6-2, 6-0; and the team of Amie Adams/Kristen Hewett won 7-5, 6-3.

In junior varsity action, the Lions won six of eight doubles matches.  Winning teams included: Hailey Grell/Steph Duregger, Kelli Gapinski/Kirsten Jordan; Miranda Mundt/Steph Duregger; Kylie Bottjen/Lindsey Loudenburg; Myah Loux/Regan Brackey; Jassmine Rucker/Alexa Julsen.

W-SR 8, CL 1

The Lions were able to only muster one win in their match with Waverly-Shell Rock Tuesday, May 7, but Coach Peterson said her team played some of its best tennis of the season.  

“Even though were didn’t get a win, this was some of the best tennis we’ve played all season.  Waverly is a very competitive team top to bottom,” said Peterson.

Clear Lake’s only win came in number one doubles, where the team of Jenna Peterson and Carly Ouverson won, 9-8 (tie-breaker 7-5).  The double matches had to be shortened due to darkness.

In singles, Peterson went 4-6, 3-6 with Liz Rucker, a State singles player and Carly Ouverson’s match lasted more than two and one-half hours.  It ended in a 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker), 2-6 (10-4 super tie-breaker).  Kaitlyn Pitzen, Taylor Julsen, Alexis Atkinson and Amie Adams were also vigilant in their play.

Coach Peterson noted the Lion JV played numerous doubles and singles matches at Wartburg College and gained valuable experience.  Picking up wins for the Lions were the doubles teams of Jasmine Rucker/Hannah Davis Kirsten Jordan/Noel Beam and Regan Brackey/Miranda Buckholtz and Hailey Grell/Kirsten Jordan.  Grell was also a winner in singles play, along with Haley Harrison.

The Lions handed out some lessons in a 9-0 match played against first-year program Hampton-Dumont Thursday, May 9.  An eight-game pro-set format was used due to the threat of rain.
