CL girls pound Lynx, 52-12

The Lions notched two more wins in girls basketball action last week.  The girls picked up conference wins on the road at Webster City and Hampton.  The victories pushed the Lions to 4-1 and keep them in contention for a North Central Conference title.  

This week the team is home for a pair of games.  They faced Clarion-Goldfield (1-4 in the NCC) last night and will take on St. Ed’s (4-1) Friday night, Dec. 14.  The only conference loss for St. Ed’s so far

 this season was to Hampton-Dumont, which the Lions just defeated.  Fans are encouraged to dress in black for “Black Out Night” against the Gaels.

Iowa Fall-Alden leads the NCC with a 4-0 mark, including a win over the Lions.  St. Ed’s is a 4-1, followed by Clear Lake and H-D, both 3-1 in the league.

CL 52, WC 12

The Lions struck early and often at Webster City, running out to an 18-6 first quarter lead, then holding the Lynx to just two second quarter points for a 31-8 halftime lead.  

“The defense got our offense going for us tonight.  I was happy with our defensive intensity,” said Lions Coach Bart Smith.   “We had controlled pressure and anticipated passes well, which led to easy lay-ups.  Anytime you can get lay ups early in a game I feel it gives our girls confidence offensively.”

Trudy Peterson and Megan Loux led the Lion offense with 18 and 14 points respectively.   Bailey Kibsgaard and Emily Willms each finished with six points, while Logan Anderson, Madison Faber and Kristen Hewett had three apiece.  

  The Lions were balanced defensively.  Kibsgaard and Hewett each grabbed four rebounds, while Kay Faber, Emily Phalen and Faber had three apiece.  Kaitlyn Pitzen and Willms finished with two rebounds and Anderson, along with Regatta Olinger, pulled down one rebound.

The Lions recorded 18 steals and had five blocked shots in the lopsided win.

CL 54, H-D 41

Again, the Lions got off to a good start and kept the pressure on Hampton-Dumont for a 54-41 victory.

“A good shooting start allowed us to gain some confidence throughout the game,” said Coach Smith.  “We were making shots in their zone.”

The Lions effectively held H-D’s post player, Taryn Barz, to 10 points.  Most of Barz’s shots were from 15-feet, which is where Smith said he wanted his defense to contain her.

“As a team we took good shots and distributed the ball very well. I was mostly impressed with how our girls rebounded and held them to 13 rebounds under their average,” added the coach.

Trudy Peterson and Kristen Hewett provided a one-two punch for the Lion offense with 17 and 12 points respectively.  Bailey Kibsgaard and Megan Loux were steady with eight points apiece and Madison Faber chipped in seven.  Logan Anderson rounded out the scoring with a basket.

Kibsgaard was the leader on the boards, pulling down seven rebounds.  Hewett had six and Loux and Peterson each had three rebounds.

“This a good road win for us to stay in the conference contention,” said Smith.  “We need to build on this win and gain some momentum before Christmas break.”
