CL girls keep improving

The more they play, the better they play. That’s been the story of the season for the Clear Lake softball team. The Lions picked up a pair of wins last week to move to 5-11-1 on the season.

“Overall, the girls are coming together as a team and believing in the Clear Lake softball program,” said Coach Megan Young.  “We are proud of their efforts and challenge them to continue to get better and 

grow as softball players.  We are excited to continue this season.”

Humboldt 12, CL 11

The Lions used a 10-run fourth and added another in the fifth to lead Humboldt 11-3, but the Wildcats rallied and scratched out a 12-11 North Central Conference victory Monday, June 17.

“This was a really tough game and a heartbreaker at the end,” said Coach Young.  “We wanted the win and almost had it at one point when we were up 11-3. The Humboldt girls came back strong with four home runs and multiple RBIs late in the game.”

The coach said she was encouraged to see her team’s offense really get going.  Seven batters in the Lion line-up pounded out 13 hits in the game.  Kaitlyn Pitzen led the way, going four-for-four and scoring two runs.  Hannah Bartlett had three hits in five at-bats, also scoring twice.  Jenna Peterson and Sara Barlow each smacked doubles good for two RBIs apiece.  Carney Frahm had two hits and reached base on a walk.

Barlow took the loss on the mound.  She gave up 13 hits, walked two and struck out four.  Twelve of the Wildcats’ runs were earned.

CL 19, G-H/V 6 (4)

The Clear Lake softball team pounded out 18 hits in a 19-6, four-inning win over Garner-Hayfield/Ventura at Lions Field Tuesday night.

“The girls put together a good game tonight.  It took some time to figure out that we need to wait on the ball and not be anticipating the hits.  Once we waited on the ball, we hit very well,” said Coach Young.

Sara Barlow, Megan Loux, Tori Fyfe and Hannah Bartlett all knocked in three runs in the contest. Barlow had three hits in the game, including a pair of doubles.  Kaitlyn Pitzen also had three hits with one double.  Both of Bartlett’s hits in the game were two-baggers.

After a scoreless first inning the Lions’ bats came alive in the second and eight runs crossed home plate.  They added four in the third and seven in the fourth to win the shortened game.

Barlow also picked up the win from the pitcher’s circle, striking out four.  She gave up 10 hits and walked none.

Brooklyn Ossman took the loss for the Cards  She pitched two and two-thirds innings, giving up 11 runs on six hits and two walks.  

Tiara Van Gerpen and Miranda Jackson each had two hits for G-H/V.
