CL girls end season with three straight wins; ready for playoffs
The Clear Lake girls finished their regular season with three straight wins. The Lions toppled conference foes Webster City and Humboldt, then wrapped up the week with a non-conference victory over Charles City.
Clear Lake (13-8 overall) opens Class 3A regional play at home tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 15) against Iowa Falls-Alden. During the regular season the two North Central Conference teams split a pair of close games.
“We hope to see a lot of fans at our game on White out Wednesday,” said Clear Lake Coach Bart Smith. “The girls are fired up and ready to make a nice run. Please, come support them.”
CL 58, WC 38
The Lions broke open a 24-20 game to post a 20-point victory over Webster City Tuesday, Feb. 7. Clear Lake went on a 23-0 run to start the third quarter on their way to a 58-38 victory.
Coach Bart Smith credited the win to balanced scoring and playing like a team.
“I like how our girls come out of half time and play with a lot of energy,” said Smith. “Defensively, we are starting to rebound a lot better. That has been a focus here lately for us as a team and its nice to see the girls make an effort to box out.”
The Lions were paced by Logan Anderson with 13 points and Megan Loux with 12. Meg Monson and Trudy Peterson each scored nine, Kristen Hewett had six, Kaitlyn Pitzen four and Madi Faber three points. Hannah Bartlett and Nicole Schmidt got into the scorebook with one point apiece.
Hewett was the leader on the board with nine rebounds for the Lions. She also made three steals. Loux had five rebounds and five steals.
CL 46, Humboldt 24
Defense was the name of the game for the Lions Friday night. They held Humboldt in check all night, picking up a 46-24 win.
“It was not the start I wanted, but the girls battled defensively the whole game,” noted Coach Smith.
Humboldt led 12-11 after one quarter, but the Lions held the Wildcats to just six second quarter points to move ahead 31-18 at the half.
