CL girls drop close matches
The Clear Lake volleyball team played a close match with Mason City and battled Charles City in a triangular played Thursday, Sept. 11, in Mason City.
MC 2, CL 1
The Lions and Mohawks were evenly matched in their outing. The Mohawks escaped with a 25-23 victory in the first game. The Lions kept their heads up and posted a 25-15 win in the second, but momentum swung back toward Mason City in the third and they won, 16-14.
Emily Phalen led the team with seven kills in the match and Lindsey Loudenberg had five. Kaye Faber set up the action with 14 assists.
Carey Frahm played good defense, making 18 digs. Phalen was credited with 13 digs.
At the service line, Faber was a perfect 9/9 with two aces and Katie Hewett was 5/5 with an ace. Loudenberg and Phalen both went 9/10, Loudenberg with two aces, and Emily Snelling served 12/14 with three aces.
Charles City 2, CL 0
Traditional volleyball power Charles City handed the Lions 25-17 and 25-17 losses.
Emily Snelling put down four kills in the match, while Sidney Borrill and Lindsey Loudenberg each had three. Kay Faber recorded 10 assists and five digs. Carney Frahm and Emily Phalen each dug out seven shots, while Snelling made six digs.
The Lions served at 87 percent, led by Katie Hewett (8/8) and Faber (4/4). Frahm and Phalen each put in five of six serves and Loudenberg made four of five attempts. Hewett, Frahm and Loudenberg each scored with aces.
