CL boys tennis team just shy of a trip to State

The Clear Lake boys tennis team wrapped up their 2014 season with a strong finish, but just missed a trip to the State Meet. The Lions competed in the Boys Substate Semi-finals at Fort Dodge Saturday, May 24.
Clear Lake opened the competition with a 5-1 victory over LeMars, but were downed by St. Ed’s in the Substate finals by the same score.

“I thought the team played very well both matches,” said Coach Rich Peters.
Sam Jones and Andrew Davis clinched the victory against LeMars, beating a state qualifying doubles team from LeMars, 6-4, 6-2.
Jones and Davis also won their singles matches, as did JJ Theobald and Jacob Peterson. Nick Chizek was defeated in a close match, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
In the Substate finals against St. Ed’s, Jones was the only Lion able to get a victory.
“We finished with a 10-3 record for the season,” said Coach Peters. “The three losses were to two of the teams that qualified for State Team Tennis (the Lions lost twice to St. Ed’s and once to Boone).  JJ and Nick will be missed next year.  They gave us great senior leadership by their work ethic.”
